Last Night’s Magic Friends Meeting

Last night’s magic meeting in Takamatsu had a great turnout. It’s a small club and most meetings have between 4 and 6 people. Last night we had 10 which was great. Our normal meeting this year consists of learning effects from the Japanese magic book “Encyclopedia of Card Magic” which is different than the English book of the same name. We started doing this in January of this year. Over these 10 months we have discovered many mistakes in the book. LOL If we were smart we should have kept detailed notes and sent them to the publisher. I am sure this book has not been reedited since it was originally published. Anyway its been fun going through the effects in this book. Two of our members, Terushita and Jack Amano will be competing in the AMA (Asia Magic Association) Convention in November. They both did a great job. It was a great meeting last night and I hope the next one will be able to keep up the momentum.

The I.B.M And S.A.M.

The Society of American Magicians

The Society of American Magicians

Today I want to blog about two of the biggest magic organizations I belong to, which are The Society of American Magicians (S.A.M) and The International Brotherhood of Magicians (I.B.M.) I first joined the S.A.M. 22 years ago around 1988 as a Society of Young Magicians (S.Y.M) member then when I was 16 changed to an adult member. In Victoria where I grew up at that time Tony Eng, Jack Poulter, and Donald Dunphy helped to run the S.Y.M. They had meetings one a month which was a great place for young magicians to learn and grow.  This club still exists today and is run by The Victoria Magician Circle however now I believe the club is linked to the I.B.M junior members club. In Victoria when I was involved in this club there were very few S.A.M members in Victoria and no assembly but I have kept my membership active all these years. When I was 16 I joined the Victoria Magic Circle which is an I.B.M. Ring. So at that time in 1991 I joined the I.B.M. and I am also still a member to this day. So why I am writing about these two organizations? Well after to moving to Japan, I found there are only a few Magic Clubs here in Japan that are affiliated with these two organizations and none near where I live on Shikoku. There are probably two main reasons for this, one, it’s expensive and second the publications for both these organizations are in English which makes it hard for a non-English speaker to get use out of. Anyways I am still proud to be a part of both these organizations. What I like is now in the age of the Internet is that I can get their publications on-line. I have the hardcopy versions sent to my mother back in Canada because it’s to expensive to have them shipped here. This your I changed my S.A.M membership to just the online version. I would like to see some more social networking features on the websites of these clubs but I am sure that they will soon come. I have to say over the years as being members of both organizations has been beneficial for me and I would recommend them to to anyone looking for a way to show they are really interested in magic. I know politics has caused problems for people in both but that is kind of normal for any organization. Just remember what you are there for to share and learn magic and I will find that they can be very beneficial for you.

Excited About Performing This Weekend

Getting ready

Getting ready

This weekend, as I have mentioned before, is the Shikoku Magic Friends Club Annual public magic show, and I am excited about it. Well I do a lot of shows so why am I excited about this one? Well as I have mentioned in my blog before and on some of my Magic AudioBoos is that I enjoy performing with other magicians. I love working with people I can’t normally work with. So I am looking forward to enjoying performing the show with them.

I am also excited because I am performing a few effects I have been revamping over the past few months. These are some of the old effects I used to do years ago that I decided to re-work so that they work better in Japanese. This show will give me the opportunity to test two of these stage routines out.

Another reason I am excited about this show because if things go well this weekend this show may turn into a monthly public show. So a few of us are working hard to make this a good event so that we will be able to continue to do this show on a monthly bases. So I better stop blogging and get back to work. Tomorrow night is the meeting then Sunday the show!

Shikoku Magic Friends Club Public Show 2009

The 4th Shikoku Magic Friends Magic Club Public Show will be held in Takamatsu March 21, 2010. Doors open at 1:00PM and the show begins at 1:30PM The event is free and free refreshments.  This is a great event as it gives a chance for those Magicians here in Shikoku a chance to perform with regular performers. There will be both a close-up show and a stage stage. The venue is small and intimate. If you will be in Takamasu, Kagawa Prefecture and want more information please let me know! I will also be in the show.

We Did Our Magic Homework!

Doing "The Duplex Mind"

Doing "The Duplex Mind"

Last month at the Shikoku Magic Friends Magic Club we decided to give everyone “homework” from the book The Encyclopedia of Card Magic which is different from the magic book of the same name in English. One of the members choose randomly pages from the book and assigned each of us an effect . Then last night we all performed then taught the effects we studied from the book. It was a great success and really showed how many great effects are contained in books that many of us overlook. So we decided to do it again for next month. The effect that I leaned and performed is something that I will keep doing and will add to my close-up show. It is a great effect half magic half mentalism. Next month as well we will have our annual public magic show. I am looking forward to next month!

Fun Magic Events

Shikoku Magic Club Street Magic Show

Shikoku Magic Club Street Magic Show

If you have read my blog you know I love performing and I enjoy performing my shows. However most of my shows are just me working solo. So when I get a chance to perform with my magician friends I always join in. I love performing with other magicians in a stage show or a close-up show. I love performing here with my fellow Japanese magicians. I also enjoyed performing with my fellow magicians in the Victoria Magic Circle when  I lived in Canada. Here in Japan the club I belong to is the Shikoku Magic Tomo no Kai.  Every year we get hired as a club to perform in the shopping district of Takamatsu 2 or 3 times a year and I just love it. We perform for about 5 or 6 hours all day. In the summer we battle the humidity and  heat and in the fall we battle the cold. But we enjoy playing off of each other and collaborating with each other. I also love watching them as well. It’s always good to build good relationships with other magicians and work with each other for shows and on show content. I hate magician ego rivalry, I rather be your friend then try to out do you for my own satisfaction. Anyways back to the topic. There is a lot of enjoyment that you can get out of performing with other magicians and if you haven’t really had experience doing it I suggest you try.
Thanks all from me today so have a great one!
